Are you interested in sustainable innovations in areas such as health and education, climate change and environmental protection, gender equality and diversity? Do you want to work in interdisciplinary teams? Do you want to develop ideas to improve living conditions in sustainable cities and communities? Do you believe in the importance of involving citizens in research and innovation?
At the Citizen Science meets Societal Challenges Hackathon (#CSHackathon2020) interdisciplinary teams can work on concepts for participatory, digital solutions to current social challenges. Students and early career researchers from all disciplines can apply, either as a team or as individuals. Programming skills are welcome, but are not essential for participation.

The first-place winners will get a chance to present their projects at the Austrian Citizen Science Conference! Applicants will also get the chance to win other goodies from our cooperation partners.

What is Citizen Science?
Citizen science is sometimes described as public participation in scientific research, participatory monitoring, and participatory action research where outcomes are often advancements in scientific research, as well as an increase in the public’s understanding of science.

How is it connected to Societal Challenges?
We believe that the best way to meet Societal Challenges is to empower society with scientific knowledge and guide them towards necessary solutions in the data and research-driven manner.

How can I contribute?
We are inviting interested students and early career researchers of all disciplines to sign up. Whether you are a technical person or your passion lies in the field of political action and governing, social interactions and many more – this is your chance to make a change! Come to the Hackathon and put your skills and ideas into practice.

What is the format?
We will host a two day Hackathon on 15 16 September 2020 for a maximum of 30 people. You may come with your own team or be matched with other participants to tackle one of the Sustainable Development Goals via public engagement in scientific research and development. You will be advised by practicing scientists, industry, technical experts, and policymakers. The whole Hackathon will be free of charge and food and drinks are on us.

What is a hackathon?
A hackathon is usually a day-long (can be 36 hours, 48 hours, etc.) coding competition, where software programmers, developers, designers, etc. come together to build and design something cool.
